Reflection
Social Learning theory presents a convincing practical approach. The experiment with the Bodo doll was so human-related unlike experiments with rats and dogs. In addition, most people can relate to someone they idolize (i.e. a Model) when growing up. Most time our first idol happens to be our parents. We grow up and wanting to be them immediately, but after some time the environment comes in play and our options for idol becomes wider from the television to the school and religious gathering. Over time, our perception of the world and the things we idolize become an adventurous swing we keep exploring.
In relation to reciprocal causation social theory, my childhood experience keeps coming back to me. Growing up during the periods of war, violence and unlawfulness were acceptable behaviors by the society. On the contrary, my mother was inculcating in us the discipline and lawful behaviors she knew would be acceptable in a better society. Seriously, I struggle emotionally to accept between the behaviors of the society and the behaviors my mother thought was right. This internal struggle had me to question my mother's love for me and in fact, I remember one time asking my little sister "Is this woman really our mother?". Fuuny that I thought so as a kid when I actually idolized her hardworking character and kind heart even until now. From the socialist perceptive my mother (i.e. Model) is that character that I tried to imitate in my daily lives. This experience is a relatively ideal example of the interdependencies of the environent, behavior and perception as key factors to behavior change.
Initially, I started my Knowledge Base with Webnode and thought Wix was difficult to work with. The classroom exercise when students demonstrated their Knowledge Bases was a great modeling influence, especially when I reaalize most classmates were using wix to develop their knowledge Bases. Watching my classmates, shape my self-efficacy and then I self-regulated myself to an entire day just trying to know Wix and work with it better. This might fit with the practical influence of environment and behavior in classroom activities.
Now, I must admit it is scary to imagine how much influence the enviroment with lots of Models through social media have on our kids. Kids spend much time interacting with these models online more then their parents. What is confusing is the perceptive factor ( self-efficacy and others) that seems to prove a person's actions could be consciously performed though influenced by the environment. This is where social learning theorists need more clarity as it relates to the individual age and mental abilty to perceptually organize information acquire form the environment. Social learning theorist might agree that we cognitively development with age, thus enabling us to independently consciously perform as we grow. Though this theory was experimented using children whose self-efficacy, self- regulation and other preceptive ability is questionable due to their cognitive ability to synthesize information due to the age suggest that this theory has a lot more to clarify.
Again, this was quite a reflective theory for me.
