Reflection
Cognitivism is quite an interesting theory with its unobservable behavior principle. After reading behaviorism observable behavior principle, I started becoming more of an observable learning outcomes enthusiast but with cognitivism, I am rethinking.
One of my unforgettable Senior high school experience has influenced this rethinking thought. This experience had to do with the struggle in passing a Biology test. I remember a day when I have studied for an entire week including the night before the test, unfortunately, I got to the test and literally forget every piece of line I have memorized. Doesn't this demonstrate that I could leap above my Zone of Proximal development at that time if I had the support of a knowledgeable willing person? I believe I could and be that Medical Doctor my mother wish I could be. Unfortunately, I grew up and even now believing that biology or its relations was/is not just my place of study. Cognitivism might describe this internal experience as learned behavior though it has not physically changed my educational drive.
Here are two points I picked up this theory:
-
Organize my teaching or instruction on my audience or students' prior knowledge. This is important because as students connect with the prior knowledge they get closer to the content and create a sense of exploring it further with the foundation they already have.
-
organize my teaching or instruction using advance organizers. This is also important especially now realizing that every student or learners have different learning styles or preferences. These learning styles or preferences with the use of advance organizers helps learners to relate with information in their schema, quite it becomes easier for every student to find their place in the learning space.
Notwithstanding, this question ponders my mind for answers over cognitivism.
-
Reinforcement schedules that facilities data location into the short-term memory or long-term suggest that learners' data is subjected to learners' preferences of a how and where to store data? if not? Is there some frequency of a repeated coding like behaviorism. Does selective perception between the short-term the short memory and the memory long-term.
